Hi, I'm Steve and I am the Associate Director of the Logistics & Supply Chain division of Precision Search (the senior Search & Selection division of Precision People). I have been with the business since July 2015.

At my previous business (a big blue-chip), I felt like I was becoming too restricted within a big corporate environment and all of the red tape and politics that came with it. Also, I wanted to see more of my daughter during the week, who was only a one-year-old toddler at the time. Things came to a head when I did not see her for a fortnight because of work and this became a critical factor. I wanted to avoid becoming a "weekend daddy" and a virtual stranger to my family - as many professional fathers can become. Things had to change but I was only going to leave for the right opportunity.....

I wanted to really stretch myself and become, essentially, my own boss without the risks associated with running your own business (having a young family meant I did not want to risk losing my home should it not work out!).

Admittedly this was a big ask and the phrase "you can't have your cake and eat it" may spring to your mind at this point.

Having met with Precision and being asked to spearhead the launch of Precision Search in 2015 with the start-up of the Logistics & Supply Chain Division - I can honestly state that it has lived up to my expectations and more.

I have all of the challenges of a brand new start up - growing a business from scratch, building a team, commercially engaging with clients, running my own P&L, getting satisfaction from our successes and most importantly BEING MY OWN BOSS.

I also receive unquestioned support from the Board, fantastic marketing support, the latest in technology/infrastructure investment and also have some senior heads to bounce ideas or problems off if required. Not to mention that I also get to work with a great group of people across the business and can work hours to suit around my family life.

To top it all off - I am seeing my daughter every night now and am enjoying seeing her grow up - which is the most important thing in the world for me.

As anyone who has done a startup can tell you, it is not easy and it takes a lot of hard graft, dedication, and resilience to make it work. However, if you are prepared to do all of this and you have the attitude to create your own legacy then I cannot think of a better way to do it.
